Q: What is different from your monitoring service than those cheap monthly monitoring guys?
There is a lot to say on this topic, but I will try to keep it to a few main points. Bottom line, always read the fine print! Here are my general thoughts on those cheap monthly monitoring promises.
1. Many of those companies literally advertise their service as a way to reduce your homeowner’s insurance. That is their entire sales pitch! As a customer worried about SAFETY and SECURITY, this bothers me- why is their entire pitch based on lowered homeowner’s insurance rates? This makes me worry about the monitoring services and where they might be cutting corners. Additionally, if they are advertising that you should purchase their monitoring solely to reduce your insurance expenses, they are essentially utilizing your insurance benefit to line their pockets. What if that reduction goes away? They still make their money while you no longer benefit!
Monitoring your home or business should be about the preservation of life and property- your LIFE and your PROPERTY. A reduction in the cost of your homeowner’s insurance is just a benefit that comes with your desire to responsibly protect yourself.
2. Typically, low rates mean long contracts. In Texas, we are limited by the length of contract we can offer, but many of these cheap offers are a minimum 36 months. The price usually jumps significantly when you want to pay month to month or not be locked into a contract. A lot of these contracts will require the entire payment up front- that’s several hundred dollars that are non-refundable, regardless of the monitoring quality!
3. That fine print often says that you must already have a “compatible” system or purchase a new system from them. This is where a lot of companies make their bucks when they have low monthly monitoring. They charge an arm and a leg for proprietary equipment that they either sell at very high rates or “lease”. The lease charge is monthly, and will most likely cover the cost of the equipment plus the difference in what they are discounting the monthly monitoring. In the event you have to purchase equipment, several hundred dollars in equipment later and they have now recovered the difference of the monitoring from you up front in equipment mark-up. Then, at the end of the 36 months, once you found out that the monitoring service was horrible, you changed your phone number 3 times from the automated calls notifying you of a low battery that was not a low battery, and you try to go to another company – you find out that the equipment you purchased with an arm and a leg cannot be used anywhere else!
Bottom Line- read that fine print. As that saying goes, “if it’s too good to be true…”, well, most likely they are recouping the monitoring cost somewhere else.
